Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! at Pioneer Theatre Company

Why see Mamma Mia!?

Pioneer Theatre Company goes full ABBA!

Salt Lake City's Pioneer Theatre Company have announced their 2017/18 Broadway season with their own full-scale production of the smash-hit musical, Mamma Mia! This sunshine-filled show redefined the concept of the jukebox musical for the new century by telling the bittersweet, yet hilarious story of single mother Donna who is struggling to cope with her young daughter's impending marriage. This musical contains all of the band's most famous hits, including 'Super Trouper', 'Lay All Your Love On Me', 'Dancing Queen', 'Waterloo', plus less well-known but equally touching songs such as 'Slipping Through My Fingers' and 'Our Last Summer'.

Originally the brainchild of British producer Judy Cramer and playwright Catherine Johnson, the two were inspired to use the band's hits in a theatrical setting after meeting with two of the band's founding members, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The show finally premiered in London's West End in 1999 and has spawned numerous international productions as well as inspiring the global smash hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried.

An Amazing Show

I attended on opening night with my sister, who had seen Mamma Mia on its original tour. We were both just blown away by the talent of the cast, the quality of the sound, and the setting of the magnificent Ohio Theater. The character of Donna is the heart and soul of the show, and I cannot imagine any better Donna than Christine Sherrill. Her vocal power and her emotion when she delivered "The Winner Takes It All" was a showstopper, even if the huge ovation she received did not literally stop the show. The entire cast was wonderful throughout- Tanya (Jalynn Steele) , Sophie (Alisa Melendez), and Sam (Victor Wallace) especially. It was a privilege, and what a fun time--enjoying all of these great ABBA songs in this context. And a joyful and exuberant time was had by all --capped by all of us in the audience singing at the tops of our lungs at the end. Even the cast seemed like they were having as much fun as we were. ... Read more

Great characters who were better actors than some in the movie!

Wonderful casting of the actors! I enjoyed it more than the movie version. It had humor, as well as many touching scenes. The actors’ voices were so strong! Thank you, thank you to the cast for coming out after the finale and singing and dancing to a few of the songs!! We have never seen that in other musicals and they had the whole audience dancing and singing. What a fun time with our daughters! ... Read more

I really did laugh, cry, sing and dance in my seat all in a span of two hours. Thanks for a enjoyable night out with my girlfriends and our daughters! ... Read more
